Hi,

two suggestions.

1)
I'd like to see an additional tab, where one can set the locks. If I add a new DVD (not from scratch, just add by UPC), I edit certain fields to my pleasing and lock them afterwards. For the locking I have to close the profile and use a context menu. IMHO that's not a good workflow.

2)
A lock should be noticeable in the edit dialog. Either by a little lock icon beside the locked item or by changing the back colour of the text box.

Definitely a great idea!
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Well, an additional tab for Locks isn't a good workflow either. Why not combine 1 and 2 to give visual feedback on locks *and* allow to set them by using a small icon/button next to each data field.

OTOH, one could argue that the current two-step process (Edit dialog, Locks menu) encourages an additional review of the entered data before locking them.

I like your thought process there.

This would be the best solution for me.

But after reviewing the edit masks, this will cause some rearrangement in the "general information" tab...

I don't see review advantage with the current locking process, since the data which the user is going to lock is not displayed at all...

Huh? All data you choose to display are displayed. You may have to bring some tabbed window to the foreground, but otherwise...

So you would possibly have to exit the lock window and reconfigure your layout then re-enter the locks window and select the locks you want. repeating this each time something isn't shown. but if there was simply a lock/unlock button next to the title (for example) while editing it you could see the data (change it to your preference if desired) then lock it right there. (this would be the case for each peice of data then)

the best way to describe it would be similar to the way the online locks work. you see the field, the data in it, and can cast your vote if it should be locked all on the same screen.

I think this is a great idea and would probably make more use of locks if it was done this way.

You don't have to enter a Locks window, but maybe you mean the General Info panel with the Lock icon and its context menu? Anyway, you don't have to use that either, because there also is a Lock icon on the toolbar, which displays a dropdown menu. It requires even one click less than the context menu to get to the lockable items.

Well, that's what I suggested in my first post to improve on the initial suggestion by DJ Doena.
The only problem is that it can lead to a certain automatism. Hence I pointed out the benefits of the current implementation.

I didn't have that lock tool bar showing so didn't know about it, so thanks for pointing it out.

It still covers part of the screen blocking your view of some of the data however. plus if the lock displayed and you could set it right next to the field I think you could more accurately lock your data because you see whats being locked.

I guess I really don't see the automatism or any downsides to that approach. I make changes to the data and can lock it right there. The lock only effects my local data, so it only effects me and I can unlock it whenever I want, for instance if I see an update that I want in that field. I think what you suggested in your first post has a much better flow to it and I was/am actually supporting that.

I mean, currently you can edit locks on multiple profiles through the use of flags, which doesn't really encourage additional review of the data.

Yes, the tabbed windows...

But seriously, When I decide to lock down anything, I fetch out a paper note sheet, write down each field to lock and each field to contribute (two different lists) while correcting the data, click OK to leave the edit windows, and immediatly right click on the DVD to lock the listed fields. Then - if there are fields for - I start the contribution...

After laying out this process I'd like another check mark AND an additional button to be added to each field/field group in the edit dialogues:
  [] Lock
  [] Mark for contribution
  [Button] Contriubution Notes
With this feature the contribution notes and the checked fields for a contribution could be set up almost automatically. In this case there should be a comparison of the changes displayed after checking the contribution check box or pressing the notes button - since this dialog only displays one field/field group it should even be easier to read than the long change list displayed when contributing...
