Just as the "add multiple", it would be nice to do an inventory by simply scanning the UPC code of every dvd on my shelves. The way this could be done would perhaps to create a huge list of ALL movies in the selected shelves, and then just pop them out of the list as you go, the remaining titles would then be the ones that never got scanned and thus aren't in stock (possibly stolen, or displaced).

Can I have that in 3.6? please? :D

This is the kind of thing that can be done very readily with a tool or plugin. Would you accept such a solution? If so, there are a bunch of folks around that could do it. I'll stand back to see if somebody comes forward who is willing to do it, again, assuming that you would welcome such a way to do it. If not, I could probably fold it into one of my other plugins, but I would perfer if somebody else, maybe a member that wants to get more involved in tools - this is one that is not hard, to get you started in the game.

Plugin or not, as long as it is possible, it means that I can do an inventory run to see that I actually have all the movies that my list says I should have I would find such a feature most interesting as a built-in function, reverse of the "add multiple" window, you start by all, and should end up with zero when done - but if that is fodder for plugin makers, I won't complain either way

Just a happy end user here

Ok cool. I'll wait to see whether Ken decides to squeeze it into 3.6 or if somebody else offers a tool. If not, I will do something. If in the meantime you "can't wait," just post that fact, and I'll bet somebody will do it - like I said, there are a bunch of tools gurus kicking around here that could knock that out.

Just thinking about this some more, it seems you have actually asked for two different things:

(1) Scan the physical inventory and check whether the list contains each item; i.e., Identify non-scanned.
(2) Check the list to see whether all items are actually on the shelf; i.e., Identify scanned but missing.

These are related, but are different. Your intial post asked for #1, and your follow-up described #2. Do you actually need both?

#1 only.
Scan all items on the shelves to verify they're there, once completed, all non-scanned items should naturally be missing.

I saw that I could associate a shelf with movies in 3.6, this is  why I originally asked for the ability to pre-select which shelf I would like  to scan

Oh, I get it. I thought by "shelf" you meant the physical storage location. I'm not sure what you mean by associate a shelf, unless you mean the "Location" field - which has been there all along, way before 3.6. Am I still confused about what you want? Maybe there is a new function in 3.6 that I missed ... Ken has added a buch of cool stuff lately. I'll go re-read the Beta changes lists. If you are possibly talking about those pretty pictures of shelves - they are just that - background images. The length of a "shelf" will be dynamically dependent on the layout. It would be a lot easier to process on the basis of "flagged" or "filtered."

Edit: Ok, I see your following post. It is so clear that I prefer to let it stand as the "last word." I'll be thinking about how to do it - meanwhile if somebody else wants to - be my guest, just please announce your intentions early if possible to prevent wasted efforts.

Naw, now you're reading too much into it

I only have some 5-600 movies, I can do a single-pass scan of them with my barcode scanner in roughly 2 hours - which should be enough to do a yearly inventory of my movies.

The location was what I was thinking of. selecting from a unique list of locations would allow me to easilly select which area to scan movies in - naturally, if you have thousands of movies, you may want to inventory parts of the collection at different times, which is where being able to select locations to scan the stroke of genious in such a functionality

But in its most basic form - a window with all movies to begin with and a text input area for the barcode scanner, for each barcode scanned, the entry in the movie list is removed. Once I reach the last movie, I'm left with the movies that I didn't scan, maybe even a happy little melody when I'm done. Of course, movies that are loaned out would not appear on that list

You know I just remembered that a member "tlevel" wrote a small plugin for inventory called "UPC Filter". It is hosted on my web site www.mediadogg.com. I don't know if he is still around, but I just tested the plugin on 3.6 and it works. Basically, it will flag any UPC entered by keyboard or scanner. When you finish scanning your collection, all the unflagged profiles will be the ones that you are missing (or never had).

Maybe try that one?

Check out DVD Inventory.

It's only a first draft but should basically do what you want.

You load your collection list into it and then scan your DVDs. It will remove them one by one. In the end you have a list of items that you didn't scan.

It'll also tell you if a scanned item is not in the list.

The requirement to press ALT-F10 to bring up the Search by UPC dialog would be excellent as long as it can be made persistent.  Maybe the option to assume if a number key is pressed/entered, display the Search by UPC dialog.

Version 3.6 automatically detects barcode scanning and takes an intelligent action, depending on the status of the profile (loaned, ordered, etc).  There's no need to press Alt-F10.

It's written for 3.5.1, not 3.6 (yet)
