It's more likely that two people made the same submission and you came across it after the first one went through.

would it show up as blank then? Manu times 2 people submit the same thing, I don't recall acceptance of the 1st deleting the 2nd. Could be wrong though

Well, if two people add the COO, after the first submission is accepted, the second has nothing left to change. This (or the same for any other field/s) is the only way I can see a blank submission appearing for voting.

What I would like to know is do  you use the opening credits for cast names?  or end credits for cast names and roles??

I recently submitted Open Range with the Lead actors up front at the top of section and not at the bottom of the section where you can't read the top$ actors names..

Im sure Open Range opens with Robert Duval first and then Kostner and then Benning's name.., Now in the end credits those names appear at the end of the credits., Well you can imagine the chastising I received by changing that order.. YET!!  the other DVD of Open Range (voted approved - Canada- same UPC number in data bank) has the cast order order with the top names in the top spot, The version I have ( 2 disc USA) has the order the other way, so by contributing the same information I got another scathing PM from Skip, (who I would probably have ignored as I immediately pulled the contribution, all you have to do is vote No and the reasons why, and I usually pull them right away). He puts this new Post in titled Hmmm .

Terry: You're at it again. I do not like what you used for cast credit but it was NOT the film's end credits as the rules dictate. I don't understand why you keep doing this, Terry

I have tried my best to advise you. Right now I am not voting on every Contribution, I am watching for newcomers who are likely to make mistakes and users whose work I cannot trust.

I think I know what you are going to try to defend your position with but I strongly recommend you review the Rules before you try. The Rules do spell out specifically what constitutes the END CREDITS and you cannot re-order then to suit yourself.

For the purposes of this section we define "standard" film credits as those where all credited actors involved are listed together in a single section at the end of the film - defined here as the "end credits". The section details both the actor’s Name and the Role that they played in the film. The credits may be listed "in order of appearance", "alphabetical order" or in an order of importance decided by the filmmakers. Some actors may be credited a second time in either credits at either the opening or close of the film."

The Rules are very clear and define exactly what consists of of end credits, it also spells out a coupl;e of exceptions. This thread had nothing to do with you, BTW. All you have to doi is follow the Rules and stop trying to go off in YOUR own direction, something which you do all too frequently and which is why I have to Vote NO on a very large percentage of your Contributions. READ the Rules.

For contribution purposes, I use end credits.  After I have contributed the profile I use the opening credits to reorder my local profile.

With normal credits I use the end credits only. But if an actor is credited in the opening credits but not in the end credits (seen in some Bollywood productions), I add the credit before the credits from the end titles.

P.S. Actors credited on the cover but not in the film would be perfectly documented examples for uncredited cast.

Fair enough,, but there are quite a few movies that introduce all the 'well paid' actors over the smaller cast actors in the opening credits, BUT most often the end credits give their roles as on screen 'in order of appearance' credits.. i.e. the old man on the parkbench feeding the pidgeons in the opening scene would get first billed in the credits, over (say) Jim Carrey ..., and Carrey's salary is $20M and the old man maybe got $500 bucks.. So You are saying the credits at the end is more important to view in your catalogue that the opening credits --where the Old man wouldn't even get mentioned,, but could be credited at the bottom of your Invelos  scroll, is  where  I THOUGHT it should be.
This way when you have friends over and they ask you.. "Hey,, who's in that new Jim Carrey movie ?", you wouldn't be wasting everyones time by reading out Joe Schmo over Jim Carrrey etc....

No, I'm not saying anything about importance. I just say what we are used to enter into the profiler database. If Unicus69's method would have gotten into the rules I would do it like that. Maybe I would even prefer it that way. Maybe I would even like a divider "rest of the cast listed in order of appearance" beween the stars from the opening credits and the rest of the credits.

For contribution purposes, I use end credits.  After I have contributed the profile I use the opening credits to reorder my local profile.

I do that too. And I just realized that now that we have the ability to enter cast twice in one profile, I could (in my personal db) enter the top cast first and then the 'in order of appearance' credits next, including repeats of the top cast, with a divider in between.

There are two reasons I can think of for listing cast "in order of appearance."  First, the credit list is in actuality the resume of the actors and crew, and to make sure you can identify someone who may not be well known, you have to have some order in presenting the cast.  What better than list them as they appear?  Secondly, it levels the playing field so that the matinee idol and diva - the top of the A-list - don't bury less well known players so deep behind their public persona that they get ignored.

I always stay in the theater and read the credit roll because I am interested in keeping track of new faces in the business, and because the work of certain people (director, special effects, costumes, etc.) can make or break a movie, so I seek out other films they've been involved in.

This method would work nicely for some of the reports as well. A lot of them only show the top X actors listed in the profile.

I just did it in my collection on the cast of A Life Less Ordinary. It looks pretty cool:

When you click on an actor's name, the film and role appear only once!

Nice work James.  I may do that in my own DB now...course that means I have to go and re-audit all my titles.

Terry:

What you describe, you are free to do locally, the Rules are very clear on this and spell out where to pull the data from and what the exceptions are. Hollywood uses a LOT of different methods to list cast, sometimes its based on billing, sometime order of appearance, sometimes alpha order and other times just some order that makes no real sense (like Open Range). But that doesn't mean that you are free to try to impose your wishes on the Online Db. You and I have been over this kind of stuff repeatedly for a long time now and I have always tried to help and explain it to you, yet I continue to see instances where you decide to take off in your direction. Just follow the Rules, my friend.
