Another feature request is the possibility of cancelling posts (by author of course!)

If you mean deleting posts, then I agree.

Yes, deleting of course!

I can't trust in this displays: When I start my PC, the browser and with it the Invelos page is started. When I'm finished reading, I leave my browser open with all its tabs - therefore anybody else could only see if my main desktop PC is running or not. - I don't think that's the really relevant information for anyone...

Yeah, but these "Who's online features" work usually with a timeout. They only show you online when you load/refresh a page. After x minutes of not refreshing a page at invelos.com it is assumed that you are offline again.

HTTP is a stateless protocol, all communication is started from the client's side, thus session Ids and cookies and other "workarounds".

Except you click on the "Keep me signed in" box...

Nope.

"Keep me signed" in means only that the cookie in your browser is set from "delete cookie when browser is closed" to "cookie invalidates in one month". But the cookie itself doesn't do anything. It does not communicate with the server nor does the server communicate with your computer.

You can test that simply with either two computers or two browsers where you are logged in on one and not logged in on the other. Go to a forum with that feature and log in. Then take the other computer/browser go to the same forum (not logged in!) and watch the "who's online" list. The timepstamp of your last activity won't change until you actively refresh the forum with your logged-in-browser.

I see, thanks for the detailed explanation!

Yes, a very good explanation of what a cookie does.  You can also think of it as a little piece of information that a website stores on your computer so it can keep track of certain information about you.  In practice, this is the only reliable means of persistence.  Stateless as DJ Doena said means that the web site can't tell you from everybody else.  The cookie is like saying "Hey, my name is John." and the web site goes "Hey, I remember you!"

But don't worry, cookies are pretty much harmless and contain zero calories.

That's what I do, Doc.<shrugs> I think we are getting carried away with minutiae. I want Program development and anything related to it. Website development unless it is program related, like a new design, takes a back seat.

You sound like someone who I got into a "fight" with on another forum related to software I use for my radio scanner.  This is a bit extreme and I don't think we need negative posts like this.

The website goes hand in hand with the software.  Personally I think feature requests should be posted, without a lot of commentary from the crowd.  Ultimately if Invelos likes the idea they will do it, otherwise they won't.  I don't see a need for this particular feature request, but hey if Invelos likes it and they have the time do it!

I absolutely disagree, jafo. The Forums are NOT part of the program at all. The Online Database IS. But that aside. So you believe that any feature request should be posted and the only thing of interest to Invelos is that users idea and opinion....I think not, sir. Invelos needs to also get a feel for how others feel about the same thing, Ken's programming time is far too valuable to pander to what ONE single user might like to see.

I have to agree that any user request should be open to discuss so that KEn & Gerri sees all sides of what people think. As for this particular request... to me is low priority... but wouldn't care if it is added.

It would be nice to see the online status of the users in the threads below their avatars. Maybe a red or a green symbol could do that. This should be in addition to the status on the forums overview page!

I like this idea, with the added option of toggling to an invisible status.

Another good idea. This would help those of us who inadvertently post a new message quoting ourselves when we meant to only edit our original post.

Sorry for posting this feature request!

It seems that I misunderstood the text below the headline of the Feature Request-Topic: "Have a nifty function you'd like to see in DVD Profiler? Post your message here"

I dared to do so, because  I consider this website as an integral part and signboard/business card of the dvd profiler! I thought that requests concerning possible website improvements are valid and should be posted here. Neither it was my aim to waste Ken's programming time nor to start an endless thread. My bad!

Again. sorry for wasting your time

I honestly don't think there was anything negative in what Skip said - of course, that could only be because I agree with him.

Exactly! "they have the time do it" is the key here, and in my mind, they (okay, he) does not have time to do it if he's working on the software...
