If memory serves, and I am sure he will correct me if I am wrong, but I believe he stated that he would not translate them because he didn't agree with them.

Indeed. the fact that he allows it, even provides a forum for it, is more that most small software companies do. INDEED | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! CBE, MBE, MoA and proud of it. Outta here

Quote: 2/ I have translated rules, in 2006 version, and posted this translation on this forum where it still can be consulted by anybody who will be able to find it. Since I think it is quite impossible to find it for somebody who doesn't speak english, I do not see the interest to update what I already translated, until Ken put those translations in an accessible place, as I requested, but was not read by people who see red each time I post. I actually don't ever see Ken doing this...posting translated rules I mean. Unless he understands the language used, there is no way for him to know that the rules say what he wants them to say. As such, he probably wouldn't sanction them. I know I wouldn't if it wre me...well, maybe if my mother translated them into Spanish for me I would, but other than that, no. (bolded by me)And just after, came from the same place nasty comments about my contributions' credibility ... Is it really necessary that I update my translation ???? | | | Images from movies |

As I said to another user in another thread, I might not always agree with their opinion on something, I do appreciate their efforts in various areas. In your case, the galleries & headshots. Do I think Ken should have non English translations of the Rules available - Yes Do I think you would deliberately translate something incorrectly - No Do I think the translations should be a Community task - Yes Do I think the translations should be stickied & linked to in the English Rules - Yes |

Do I think you would deliberately translate something incorrectly - No
Do I think the translations should be a Community task - Yes
Do I think the translations should be stickied & linked to in the English Rules - Yes on all counts. For Yves: The Rules have been updated which means any translation needs to be updated as well. I know you did the Original French Translation, I would hope you update for your fellow French speakers, likewise for german(whoever did it) or any other language the Rules have been translated into. | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! | Posted: | | | | I will repost this here;
Something I have noticed, if you want something updated, you need to be very specific.
You cannot just ask for the rules to be updated in a general sense. If you want something updated, come up with the phrasing to update. Or definitions or something.
Ken will update the rules, but we need to do the leg work. WE need to start with a concept, on part of the rules, then debate and come up with wording that people can agree on.
Once debate gets done, then poll it in the rules forum, debate some more, then put poll in contributions forum, debate some more.
Once we get to an agreement, and polling tends to agree, then we can call on the Zombie master. If the stars are aligned and we are worthy, he will appear and make judgment.
At least this is what I see..
Charlie
EDIT- In all seriousness though, I do not think Ken is going to do the leg work. We need to take a small section to change, then work on it amongst ourselves, until we can come to some sort of agreement. It needs to be specific, not a general "Please update the rules". |

What are you going on about? That was my only post in that thread directed at you. Don't try to tell me that you forgot your comments about the credibility of my contributions, that decided me to stop contributing. OK, that was not in the same thread, but the message is the same: about translation : I will never trust surfeur's translation about contributions : Surfeur's contribution have no credibility Conclusion : a 4 star user decides that the work of another user has strictly no value. Good help for the community... | | | Images from movies | | | Last edited: by surfeur51 |

| Posted: | | | | The problem with translations of the Contribution Rules, no matter how well-intended (and I'm sure they are), is that those who use any rules translation would STILL need to submit Contribution Notes in English, since AFAIK Ken does not have a whole army of non-English speaking screeners at his disposal.
As a matter of fact, I think those users would be better off using the original Contribution Rules in English, because then at least there's a fair chance the terminology used remains the same (unlike when that terminology is being translated back and forth between English and any other language).
Is this a complication and can it be an obstacle for foreign users to contribute? Yes, definitely. Is there a way around it? Only if Ken would be both able and willing to hire screeners reading/writing the language of any rules translation. | | | Last edited: by dee1959jay |

I'm quite sure that in every locality you'd find several users (some of them probably even trustworthy) who would do this job even for free. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! I see you're still upset about your misunderstanding of my statements and, instead of acting like an adult and admitting that it was a misunderstanding, you play the victim. It seems to make you happy, so feel free. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. Perhaps I'm totally wrong when I translated "wre" as "were", and perhaps the meaning is not what everybody can read, but I doubt that. I do not play the victim, I say what I think of a bully. You began that sad game three years ago when you feigned not to understand the comparison of the drowned baby, and always kept this attitude. | | | Images from movies |

| Posted: | | | | It's nothing opersonally against you. Martian is saying that as Ken doesn't read French, he has no way of knowing whether the translation is correct. This would be the case no matter who did the translation, so there's no need to take it personally. |

This would be the case no matter who did the translation, so there's no need to take it personally. While I'm sure he meant nothing by it, I can understand why someone might perceive more from it. In essence, it can be read that the user might be deliberately misleading people with their translation. I'm sure that there are people out there who might do that, I don't think that any of the "known" users would do so, even if they didn't agree with the rule. It wouldn't do them any good as sooner or later they'd be found out. Really it's no different to someone lying in their contribution notes - In almost all cases, someone will call them on it & if it's a serious issue, report them to Ken. |
