Screen caps and Time Stamps Pete are because there are thousands of names which we might NOT recognize, but might recognize the face.

I have mentioned her repeatedly, Kathleen Freeman, and no one has yet to say yeah I know who she is. But if I put a picture of her you would recognize her.

Personally I would look her up on IMDb

Hmmm, James I see your point. I would probably do that personally if I felt it necessary.

As a means of documenting exceptions, I think it's fine to be one of many tools. But not as a requirement for all linking.

That still wouldn't be a source of the master name. Help show who you are talking about sure... but would not be a source for a name... so it still wouldn't belong in that list.

Well, it's getting better I think, I figure only 40% of this thread is devoted to trying to reason with Skip. 60% is actually on target.

As long as they spike the drinks, I'm happy

I can see why pictures can be useful on some occasion though. If one person believes that a certain actor is credited in a movie under a different name, he could use it to prove that that actor is the one he tries to link it to. If that made any sense

Sure, they used to do it all the time on HKMDB and AsianDVD to figure out who was in what film, since credits were notoriously incomplete and unreliable for these early Kung Fu films.

And that was just as useful. Why is it okay for you to post useless drivel after you call out someone else for the same?

I am stil trying to figure out why IMdb would poison an actor's name.

I know they poison the credits, but the name itself boggles the mind.

You really think that they would purposely put "Samuel Q. Jackson" so that no one would find Samuel L. Jackson?

I think I mentioned this in another post but you are right on the money...and everybody seems to be ignoring your point.

Poisoned data is a non-issue for common names.  They 'poison' the credit lists to prevent data mining...they do not 'poison' actors names.

If we update with the cast member as the name they usually go by and "credited as" as the name they may have used in a few titles, what is it supposed to look like when we contribute it?  The ones I contributed, which are right in my database, list the "credited as" name in both fields in my contribution.  I am confused as the contributions seemed to be right yesterday.

First select the actor name from the database that represents the actor's name (common name) and then edit, if only necessary, the 'credited as' to match the film credits exactly.

Example: If you are editing The Wedding Party, select Robert De Niro from the master list. In the 'credited as' space, enter 'Robert Denero' since that's how he's credited.

Thanks for the reply.  I did just that in my database for several of the more obvious ones.  However, when I contribut the changes, the same "Credited as" name (Vincent Phillip D'Onofrio for one) shows up in both fields.

It looks like Vincent Phillip D'Onofrio [Vincent Phillip D'Onofrio] as Dawson when I contribute but Vincent Phillip D'Onofrio is clearly only the credited as name in my system.  I am not sure what is wrong.

I feel very strongly, that accents should be kept in! Mädchen Amick is not called Madchen Amick! That is not her name and the pronounciation is totally different from the two (if she's credited as Madchen, we should go for that as the "credited as" name of course). Also, Hungarian, Turkish and Czech names have lots of accents and their names would be totally different without them.

The search problem can be fixed by logic in the program. When entering letters in the search field, the program could just disregard the accents and it would find the name whether you put in the accent or not. I'm sure Ken would agree that this is absolutely doable.

Please lets not vandalise people's names for technical reasons (when they can be overcome).

As for using IMDb as a source for common names is fine. It's not like stealing data, it's just about agreeing on a fix point or de facto standard for names (however, I have a problem with their representation of asian names). IMDb is user created, just like DVDP and if someone think that a name is wrong, they can just change it, just as they can in DVDP (I personally have changed the names of several people in there because they were spelled wrong). The upside is that virtually all the names we can think of can be found in there.

I've got the same problem as you. It works fine in my database but it looks like this in the contribution window:

T. Samoilova [T. Samoilova]
A. Batalov [A. Batalov]
V. Merkuryev [V. Merkuryev]

As you can see, same name in bouth of the fields. But the names in my database are "Tatyana Samojlova", "Aleksey Batalov" and "Vasili Merkuryev" and the "credited as" feature works just fine.
