The recurring cast IS THE MAIN CAST. That's why they're called "recurring."
Your definition of Recurring Cast is not the same as ours. The way we are using it Main Cast means people that are credited in every episode even when they are not in said episode. Recurring Cast would be semi-regulars that are only credited in the episodes they are in.
As an example, Edward James Olmos is a Main Cast member for Battlestar Galactica. He is in the credits for every episode. Luciana Carro is a recurring cast member. She appeared in 18 episodes. She does not appear in the credits for every episode, only the ones she was actually in. She, and actors like her, don't belong in the Main Cast section of the credits. Unicus is exactly right... this is exactly what I am saying. The main cast is the stars of the show... credited in every episode. They would have top billing. Recurring cast is someone that is there for a few or even almost all episode that air but don't get billed in the opening credits... for example... the tv series Buffy the Vampire Slayer... The main cast (or stars of the show... what you call recurring) would be the one that plays Buffy and her friends that are right there with her. Now you also have cast like Kristine Sutherland who plays Buffy's mom... she is in almost every episode of the first several seasons... but she never got main cast... she was only credited for the episodes she was in. She is a recurring star. So what you have is... Main Cast (Stars of the Show) Recurring Cast Guest Stars Extras The only thing that should be singled out for top billing above the episode dividers is the Main Cast.. | | | Pete |

Why do we continually have to redefine terms that are well known and used in the industry to mean certain things? Boxset, and now this. I used BG specifically as an example because they refer to the regular cast as recurring cast. Recurring, btw, means happening more than once, which is exactly what those people do re: the parts they play. | | | John

| Posted: | | | | not redifining anything... the way I wrote it is the only way I have ever known it to be.... and obviously the way most ppl know it to be since you seem to be the only person calling main cast recurring cast.
Apparently what you feel is well known isn't well known to the viewing public. | | | Pete |

| Posted: | | | | Have to agree with Pete, in all my years, there has always been a difference between Main cast and Recurring cast. Yes, they are both on contracts, but that means squat.
Recurring means that they appear occasionally throughout a season. This is why they are not credited in every episode and are not guest stars.
You'll also notce that these recurring actors are usually billed AFTER the Guest Stars. | | | Signature banned: Reason out of date... |

| Posted: | | | | Again, A.D. Skinner from The X-Files is the perfect example for this. He was in dozens of episodes in the first few seasons, then made the credits. He would have been classed as recurring during those first few seasons, during which time only Duchovny and Anderson were classed as main cast. |

| Posted: | | | | Honestly, who cares? We're making a huge deal about the definition of the word recurring. It's pointless.
Main cast - Top of the cast list Everyone else - Credited for each episode they're in
Why the insistence on making this more difficult? | | | "I am Andrew Ryan and I am here to ask you a question: Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his own brow?

Agreed. It seems half the arguments around here are about definitions instead of data. Quoting chibul: Quote: Main cast - Top of the cast list Everyone else - Credited for each episode they're in
Why the insistence on making this more difficult? I agree again. Call it what you want. It doesn't really matter. There's no point in arguing about definitions. I guess it depends on how you define the word argument |

| Posted: | | | | However the question posed back on page 1 I think it was was never answered, what happens if a person is not in the opening credits of a show at the start of the season and is listed as a guest star, and then four or five episodes in is added into the main titles, should we put them in as a Main Star and a Guest Star, or just a main star? example Cote de Pablo in Season 3 of NCIS, first 2 episodes guest star, third episode not credited, then main cast member. I would be inclinded to put her as a main cast and not credit as guest star, but I'm sure this isn't the only situation of this happening. |

On one hand, I don't want to have people added to the main cast that weren't there from the beginning of the season, solely because if we do that, we lose whatever episodes they were previously in. At the same time, they shouldn't be left out of the main cast just because they weren't there during the first episode of the season. | | | "I am Andrew Ryan and I am here to ask you a question: Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his own brow?

I don't recall ever seeing the term "recurring cast" EVER used in any TV series, the closest thing that comes to mind was a 3-year stint of Special Guset Star: Jonathan Harris as Dr. Zachary Smith.
Also it is not uincommon for "recurring" cast members to be credited with different roles in subsequent shows, so they are not "recurring" roles only "recurring" actors, but that is not what this discussion is about.
And its not really all that hard.

You are the first person I have ever heard that claims 'recurring cast' and 'main cast' are the same.
BTW, I know what 'recurring' means...but as far as credits are concerned, Main Cast aren't 'recurring', they are constant. Occasionally you see this in series, NOT all that frequently and it when it is used it is noit used consistently. the basic premise still follows As credited in the Order they are credited. We don't worry about such designations in film, TV is no different in this regard. Typical, let's take an ant hill and turn it into Mt. Everest. Skip<shakes head> | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!!
