Thanks for the quick reply, Gunnar!

So, it’s a bug in Profiler and will likely never been fixed. I found a workaround though. I have only about 20 discs with “Play All” or “MovieIQ” feature. I can write the name of the feature in “Notes” and then set the condition for the image: Notes -> Contain -> “name of the feature”.

Clever.

This conversation reminded me I had not downloaded the iOS version onto my iPad (I am a recent Apple user) and once again I am blown away by this profiler app, even after all these years and no updates - still a wonderfully conceived and implemented software. Sounds like you had a similar experience on your Fire tablet.

Strange.. the latest version, 2.1.9.5 works for me.

Not strange at all. Your comment would have been more helpful if you gave some environment or configuration information that could be compared to the poster who is having problems. How is your installation the same or different?

(Edit: Oh, I do see some config info a couple of posts back.)

Other ideas:

If I am not mistaken, custom (plugin) fields are in fact available in HTML sections. Anyone with HTML skills can make a custom display of data, at least at the profile level.

And of course, all custom data is available in the XML export. So, you could use Excel or whatever to make a report if you have those skills.

Would there be any value to having a "FauxReport" plugin that:

(1) (Temporarily) Copies data from specific plugin fields to profiler fields,
(2) Runs a specific report whose headings reflect the plugin data content,
(3) Puts the original data back into the profiles?

Oh yeah, I can see the possible dangers. But just throwing an idea out there ...

Was worried too, even contacted mediadogg via mail :D I'm wondering though if we should take some steps which would make it easier for us to at least have a chance to continue using the software should the site go down permanently. At least a forum/discord/whatever which the "active" members know exists and would hit up in case of a downtime to be able to communicate.

It must be said too, it would be much easier to reverse engineer the network protocol for a simulated server experience / a server replacement while the live server is actually running. Will be much harder once we only have the client...

I agree with all you said. Been thinking about the protocols for a long time, but I wanted to avoid anything that had the appearance of being illegal, so I have sent a couple of emails requesting access to the technology for free or fee. No response.

Hello, not to tread on DJ's turf, but I do notice that you are recently registered and might not be aware of the Location and Slot fields in the Profile.

That being said, I will leave it to DJ to elaborate on your original question. Good luck and welcome to the community.

Thanks for the reply.

I did see the Location and Slot fields, but was not 100% sure what they were for. They seem more geared toward disk changers or binders...

I have a bunch of shelves with DVDs and Blu-Rays still in their cases (like library books).

If Location and Slot will work for my situation that would be great. I will check it out.

Would still be interested in if I can get said Extended Notes fields into a report though.

Thanks again for the quick reply.

Profiler does not impose any semantics on Location and Slot, except that the UI makes some assumptions about how people intend to use them, in terms of how they are sometimes displayed. However, internally, they are simply text fields. I'm sure there are a lot more people using them for shelves and binders than for disc changers!

Hey DJ Doena,

I've installed your plugin and have created two new notes"Room" and "Shelf" to record the location of the physical disc.

My question is, how do I get that info into a report?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

As the Dutch saying goes (roughly translated), don't throw away the kid when you empty the tub...

I enjoyed your post. I share many of your thoughts.

The American English version of the Dutch saying that I learned was "Don't throw out the baby with the bath water."

Here is something I found on a web site called Deep English:

"Many English idioms come from centuries ago. Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater means to be careful not to throw away good things when you are throwing away bad things. In the middle ages, people lived without the luxury of running water. Back in those days, everyone shared the same bathwater. The father of the house bathed first, and the mother bathed next. The children would bathe last. By this time, the water was so dirty that you couldn’t see through it and might accidentally throw the baby out with the bathwater. This expression was borrowed from German in the 1800s."

My goodness. I had no idea that Carousel was even being used these days. Sadly, I no longer have one to do any testing.

As an aside - no custom profiles (those created by BulkEdit) downloaded to the new database.

Ouch!!!!

Sorry, guess we didn't test that thoroughly.    It was many Christmas seasons ago - I remember testing over the whole holidays, along with DJ Doena and others, a massive Profiler update. I'm pretty sure you will get them back from a local backup.

Did you perhaps also do a refresh from the Invelos online after you downloaded from your collection?

If so, you might have overwritten your local changes (I'm on thin ice here ...)?

DVDs are encoded by people. Need I say more?

There are standards for how they are encoded, but a lot of fields are optional and with no quality control on the content. (or maybe I should say insufficient quality control)

Here is one explanation of the DVD file format.

I am learning something here. But I would be surprised if the players are actually doing any translation. They are most likely accessing pre-translated text stored on the disc. That means that the failure you are seeing for that DVD you mentioned is possibly not due to the player, but that the translated text is not actually on the disc? (or video segments where the translation has been done)

Good info has been provided. For another layer of protection, using your old computer and database, you could upload your database to online and also do a full XML export. That will give you two more avenues for recovery later, if somehow the backup file continues to be a problem (unlikely).

Nope.  Tried that -- and just checked again-- and mine's not there under Purchased apps...

As I mentioned before, I do have a(nother) beat-up, decommissioned, old phone that has it still working, so I might use it just at home maybe for scanning UPCs I guess...

I'm also checking out My Movies in the meantime.  The importing of DVDP's exported file has been very dodgy.  Took many tries before it finally worked (for ~95% of my collection of over 2K titles)... and even then, the result is very wanting since it ignores almost all personal data, including changed Sort Titles -- and the handling of boxsets is a pain if you want to keep your old collection numbers.  And doesn't seem to have nearly the flexibility for reassigning collection numbers like DVDP, which I separate into different formats...  And the desktop software is excruciatingly slow... and heavy, requiring MS Sql Server (at least the PC version), despite being very spartan...  Seems really only usable as a mobile app or for small collection...

Some great info. Will add to my conversion notes. It would be possible to process profiler XML to compensate for some of those issues. Hopefully someday, I can work on it, or collaborate with somebody else to do it.

I’ve just noticed this as well, as I was planning on buying a new iPad, and checking that my apps would all be ok. It’s still on the Google Play Store, but not the App Store for iOS. Is DVD Profiler dead? I know it hasn’t been updated for a few years, but as it works ok, that’s not too much of an issue. But if it can’t be reinstalled, what alternatives are there? I use my iPad app daily, and would be screwed without it.

I never purchased the ios app, and am only a recent Apple convert. I tried to find profiler for my iPad mini just now, and indeed it was not there.

I suspect that with the large number of upgrades that Apple makes, the apps need to be continually validated to remain available in the store. Even the latest versions of macOS do not install on the old mac laptops and minis that a friend of mine gave me when he closed down his business.

So, I am of the mindset that maybe "DVD Profiler," as a set of services is generally not dead, thanks to the generosity of whomever manages Ken Cole's assets (hopefully and I pray that it is Ken himself), but it is pretty clear that further development has been shut down.

Do you mean "Profile Refresh Needed"?

If so, then look for those options on the "Online" menu. These are options that update the local database to reflect the latest online database contents.

F5 (Refresh Collections List) is different. This updates the UI to reflect the latest contents of the Local database.

Old post, but still relevant. We now have a direct results of lack of a "secure" site, with a user posting links to sex services.

As a point of information, I looked at the internal API and noticed that the collection type is stored as an integer. So I tested setting the integer to some big number, and nothing crashed. The API even returned the number back temporarily. But eventually, the API to get the collection type reverted back to the default. If the integer had "stuck" in the database, we could have written a plugin or used HTTPJolie to enable an external tool to support more categories.

I mention it because you never know when we might get lucky and such an approach allows us to get a new feature we previously thought was impossible. So keep the idea tucked away for the future.

Click the checkbox "Within Title" and the Edition will be found.

Oh, maybe not. In my test, "Archive Edition" seemed to be part of the title. The Edition field was something else.

Not a biggie, but if I have HTTPJolie enabled and disable it I get a DVDProfiler popup error with

Cannot access a disposed object.
Object name: 'System.Net.HttpListener'

I can cancel out of the popup and continue using profiler without issues. May be unique to my system.

Thanks for the report. I will be working on it.
