| Posted: | | | | I submitted a contribution for Hannibal Rising and I have gotten 3 no votes because Dominic West has a birth year. I did not add a birth year to Dominic West. Someone else did on another DVD and I downloaded the update and now everytime I add Dominic West to a profile, he has a birth year.
When we find an actor that already has a birth year, are we to remove it? I have no idea if there are more than one actor with that name or not. |

| Posted: | | | | One of the cover scans I submitted also flagged a person with a new birth year which I didn't add. I didn't know where it came from so I excluded it. |

| Posted: | | | | Well, since in this particular update you're changing other cast members you can't exclude him, so the only other thing would be to remove the Birth Year from your profile and then resubmit it (you don't have to Withdraw, just make the change and resubmit, it will overwrite the current one).
There's very few actor's which require a Birth Year and at this point with the whole Common Name thing up in the air I can't imagine any being approved except ones being completely obvious or a lengthy discussion prior to being accepted.
I personally cannot find any reference anywhere of any other Dominic West except the one we all know from Rockstar, 300, and Hanibal Rising so I can't see any reason that a Birth Year exists.
Do you happen to know the profile update that was approved and that you downloaded which contained the Birth Year to begin with? The movie and UPC code? This may help us track down what happened and get to the bottom of what happened.
-edit- Also, in that particular profile change, your Studios are out of order. Rules specify the order should be Theatrical release, Production, then DVD release. You have Production first, then Theatrical release. | | | "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" - Douglas Bader "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams | | | Last edited: by Vega |

| Posted: | | | | per the rules Quote: Enter birth years only when necessary to differentate between two actors with the same name. When submitting a contribution that adds a birth year to one or more credits, list justification in the contribution notes.
If the birth year change is due to an accepted change to another profile, indicate that. In your case the birth year is there "due to an accepted change to another profile". Note that in your contribution notes. Once you put that any NO votes would be incorrect but not surprising. |

I would still question the validity of the original profile change that caused this and would like to know the movie and UPC that was accepted. I can see this with some actors (Colin Farrell being the most recent) but what other Dominic West is out there? I have a feeling this slipped through with some lesser known movie he did and some blind voting. | | | "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" - Douglas Bader "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams |

| Posted: | | | | I've noticed another problem with BY submissions. At some point someone (correctly) noticed that there were two Graham McPhersons and submitted a BY for one of them. Unfortunately when I uploaded this new profile the BY automatically attached itself to all the Graham McPhersons in my database - including the wrong one! Surely when we add a BY to a profile, the program should assume that all other occurences of the name in the database are the other name, until we manually connect them? This could cause a lot of grief in the future if it's not fixed. |

The assumption is that you add the birth year to the more popular one and it then gets propogated through all the other titles with you only having to change the few that contain the 'rare' version. This is because if you download a title with a changed birthyear it is more likely to be the 'popular/famous' one which gets put into your database... either way it is done will catch someone but this way spreads the birth year more quickly rather than relying on the user to go through each film in their collection and manually make the change after a download of one film. | | | It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong |

That seems to me to be a very dangerous way to do it. All it takes is one person to miss an entry and the BY will become connected to the wrong name. Then if a profile with that name is submitted, as the BY was attached because of a prior acceptance, it will be automatically accepted as a change and the split names will become merged again. |

Very strange. I would suggest removing the Birth Year and resubmitting your Hannibal profile (and don't forget to reorder the Studios ) | | | "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" - Douglas Bader "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams |

When we find an actor that already has a birth year, are we to remove it? I have no idea if there are more than one actor with that name or not. When looking around at various third party sites it appears as there is only one Dominc West that became an actor so therefore no reason for a birth year to have been added in ther first place. I would remove the birth year and if anybody votes no against it, I would point out the fact only one actor named so birth year not required as per the rules. Steve |

| Posted: | | | | Boykin, something else just occured to me. I've seen mentioned in the other forums that a "master" backup of the actor/crew list with thousands and thousands of photos all ready inserted has been released. Unfortunately, the author noted that many of the actors have birth years in their profiles. Did you happen to restore this backup for actor/crew photos to your Profiler? I think that might explain where Dominic West's birth year came from. It's also a little worriesome that the person compiling the "master" backup file isn't removing the birth years, but I realize that could be a near impossible job. I just have a bad feeling we'll be seeing more of these random birth years popping up in submissions. | | | "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" - Douglas Bader "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams |

That is my point, but next time it may be someone removing a birth year and getting no votes for removing it. I did not restore a master cast/crew backup. The only thing I can think of is adding 300 SD and 300 HD DVD to my wish list. I know I did not do it manually, because I did not even know who he was until all this started. I have no idea which one it could have been downloaded with. I originally had over 500 updates to review when 3.0 cam out. I have that down to just under 150 now, but that number keeps going up and down as new updates are approved and I review more. |
