Why do people always ignore the second part of that sentence?  That field is also for indicating special versions and collections.

Has that always been there ? I don't recall ever having read such clear indication that collections should as Widescreen Collection should go in the Edition field.

Yes, it has always been there.  As a matter of fact, it caused this same exact argument over at IVS.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Ok, well I'll see what happens . Another Star Trek fan has showed up and also gave me No votes on all Star Trek movies . Funny how this argument never happened with any of the other movies that I gave the Widescreen Collection thing (and I'm already at the letter S now in my collection ).

BTW, according to the rules, "Widescreen Collection" as Edition is allowed.
Somehow, this sounds wrong. The rules should not 'allow' anything but rather 'dictate' it ! How else can you have a consistent master database ? 'Allow' means that it's ok if you don't put it in and it's ok if you put it in. It should be either one or the other.

In my case allowed is just the term I used... as per the way the rules are written  Widescreen Collection does belong in the edition field.... being a collection alone (whether it is a marketing gimmick or not... what on a cover isn't for marketing anyway?) shows that it does belong there.

What strikes me in this discussion is that most people don't actually LIKE the fact that "Widescreen Collection" belongs in the "edition" field. While I agree that rules indeed tell us to do so, I'd very much support any rule change that would make it possible to leave them out.

There are a lot of people out there who want that sort of thing in there, too.  Who LIKE it that way.  That's why the rule is written that way in the first place.

The "Widescreen Collection" descriptions come in handy when you are adding DVDs to your collection on the fly. I just did a few on my PDA. The amount of informaton you get to preview is limited in the mobile version. I was able to find the ones I wanted based on the description and get them into my Ordered column.

Name linking works on the mobile app too, don't forget.  Thankfully we can also engage the "substring filter".

Count me with you, Pete. For one very simple reason, to go back now requires way too much work.

It's already possible to leave them out, no data added to a profile is mandatory (well, except form those couple of entries DVDP requires to do the upload at all). You don't have to add "Widescreen Collection" to submit a valid contribution, you don't have to download it to your local db (just lock the title field), but you're not allowed to delete this piece of information once it's in the profile.

For years this discussion has come up time and time again, and I still fail to see the problem. All the pro and contra arguments have been exchanged numerous times, solemnly and heatedly, and the fact remains that this data is allowed, regardless of the number of different editions past and future. Still, if we don't have some name-parsing or wrong-vote discussion, surely this is a must-go discussion to spark again. After all, we've only spend something like a hundred pages on this topic so far (in several threads, mind you), that's not even remotely close enough to call it off....
