(...) Protestant denominations have quite different naming traditions.  One of the major ones is replacing one's middle name with the maiden last name upon marriage. (...)

Protestants in the Old World (at least non Anglo-Saxon) usually do not have this tradition.

And this is relevant why? The actor involved here was born in the "New World". I am well aware of European naming practices and traditions and they are different from the traditions used in Europe...sometimes. Sometimes they are not any different at all...but that is n individual choice over here. We even have double barreled first names over here Billy Bob//, Ellie Mae//. The call on how a person's name is handled is up to them not some cultural norm, which is what makes it such a complex issue.

Just put the options up for voting then get the result added to the common name database.

I don't care if it's 'culturally' correct or not. We just need to agree on a name for everyone to use.

Sometimes there is no right or wrong answer.

It's DVD Profiler NOT Genelogy Profiler.

Right, and that's why I support the first name/everything in the middle/last name setup, because it completely ignores any cultural premises, and that's the only non-partisan way to do it.

Submission for Cocoon was declined, but for reasons unrelated to Mrs. Jean Howard's name.

The new BY rules kicked in Aug 1 and since the original submission of Tyrone Power, Jr's birth year (1959) this spring precedes that, it was declined for lack of documentation.  To distinguish him from his father, THE Tyrone Power, known early in his career as 'Jr' also (are any movies on DVD with him credited like that?  They would have to be early to mid 30's but i can't find any in our DB) i've resubmitted with a link to a stage playbill with him credited as Jr. in the mid-30's to show the BY separates to people who can be named Tyrone Power, Jr.
Bad movie?  You're soaking in it!

But in lots of cases it is just plain wrong.

In Spanish groups you take your father's family name and your mother's family name as your 'last name'. The actor 'Gael García Bernal' may be known by his full name or just 'Gael García' but his 'last name' is 'García Bernal'.

Actually using *three* names *is* culturally partisan.
But let's be pratical.
Nothing wrong in dividind a name in three parts.
Just let's make sure users will use it right. *Perhaps* change the name field, but most importantly use hints/reminders/whatever so people will use, enter and search 'Gael/García/Bernal' (à la DVDP3) instead of 'Gael//Garcia Bernal' (as it is in real life).
My 2 cents.

As I have noted previously. The answer IMNHO is to use the three names as a default position, with more names in the middle. Then if they can be documented to be differently parsed we can then change it accordingly, seems the simplest answer.
