When contributing a DVD that is regions 1-6, I've noticed that some people vote "no" and say that your must select "All" according to the rules. Since the rules do say: List DVDs encoded for at least Regions 1-6 as "All." Now there isn't an "All" feature just regions 1-6 or none. I know that when you select regions 1-6 it gives you an "M," which stands for Multiple or as I see it, it stands for "All." What do you think?

AIUI 1-6 is the same as None (ie Region Free) at least wrt to Profilers since it does not recognise 7 & 8

M is there for any more than 2 regions to stop the string being too long for display so could be 3,4 or 5 of the regions.

That's it. I gather he should leave all regions unticked, to mean ALL.

As a side note, DVDP allows both "None" and 1-2-3-4-5-6, even if they both mean the same for DVDP purposes. Maybe the program shouldn't allow to tick all six regions, as in that case you should tick none.

There is technically no region coding 'none', but there is region 'all' which for profiler purposes is anything that includes at least regions 1-6. This region coding 'all' has to be entered into profiler as 'no region coding'. For other purposes the coding 'all' is also noted as '0' (zero). All of this means the same, namely that the bit 1-6 of the region code are set.

Note: there are also bits 7 and 8. But these are completely ignored for profiler purposes.

as a side note I always change DVDs which are shown as all so that all the boxes are ticked instead. This is so that I can search for all dvds which include R2. If the 'ALL' region dvds are left without all the boxes ticked then they don't appear in the list of R2 dvds.

Just a thought: you wouldn't have to do that if you had an "Include no region" checkbox when you Search by Region, like in the "Add DVD by Title" window.

that would be correct.

But I actually use the program that I have now.. not some future 'virtual' version..

I don't think this is correct - I have discs that have no region flags set, and I have discs that have all the region flags set. Although it's true that it produces the same result, there is a difference between no regions and all regions.

I guess it depends on how a program shows that information.
Have you tried checking with VSO Inspector?

I have yet to see such a disc. Such a disc would only be playable by region free players. Any normal region locked player, no matter from what region, would fail to play such a disc. If you see the region zero logo on the cover, this usually means that all flags are set exactly the same way as when you see the region all logo.

I've been doing some tests and it turns out that whoever came up with "all regions" and "region free" made a bigger mess of it than some of our decisions here! (Used VSO Inspector, AnyDVD, IFOEdit, Nero InfoTool for the tests)
It turns out that when a disc is described as "all regions" it's only talking about regions 1-6. Sometimes 8 is there too, but it's not necessary to call a DVD "all regions". However (and this is the wierd bit) if all 8 regions are encoded, then the disc is described as "region free"! Go figure!
So it turns out the difference between "all regions" and "region 0" is region 7. Whether we want our Profiler information to go into that much detail is another matter. I personally am not that fussed. What I've been doing is going by the logo on the back cover - if it's a "0" logo and regions 1-6 are encoded, I tick none. If it's an "All" logo and regions 1-6 are encoded, I tick all. Seems simple enough.

Edit: the reason I thought these discs had no regions set is because IFOEdit reports a disc with regions 1-8 encoded as having a region flag of "0" - thus my confusion! If I remember rightly, regions 1-6 reports 192, and regions 1-6, 8 reports 64.

VSO Inspector, on the contrary, reports 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8.
That's why I said it depends on the program.

That's what IFOEdit reports too - it was me misreading it that was the problem.
From what I can gather, region code works using an 8-bit code. For every region code allowed a bit is set to 0. This means the region value in the IFO actually reduces the more regions are allowed.
