I have the feeling that the following DVD I bought is a bootleg but still doubt and wondered if I can add the title to the archives (if DVD is an official release only off course).

7-58445-50082-0  Red Shoe Diaries: Luscious Lola

The reasons why I think it's a bootleg:

1/Made in China, Korea actually
2/Cover smells like printer ink + iit's quality is very weak (vertical stripes in the background)
3/DVD states 2002 as production date while cover says 2000
4/Weak DVD quality, seems like VHS transfer
5/Cover doesn't state there is chinese subtitles or any other chinese signs, while DVD disc does contain Chinese writings.

How can one check that this DVD is original and not a bootleg?
Thanks!

It seems to me you have a bootleg, even though the UPC does check out. I went over to Rottentomatoes.com and here is the image they have (without chinese writing):

Also you should have these features on the disc:
Production Stills
Deleted Footage
Screenplay
Original Diaries
Trivia Games

And the audio tracks were English and Spanish. The movie by the way was released on DVD in 2000.

Does the disc have the special features I mentioned above?

If you can I'd say provide a scan of the cover (front and back) there are usually tell tale signs, e.g. they use rating logos from more than one country or not suitable for the country on bootlegs.

I know there are some websites out there, that you can actually print the covers from, so my best guess is that is what they did. Also someone could have burned the movie onto a disc and then repacked it. When you opened the package was the plastic loose or tight like when you usually buy a DVD?
Also you can download a free program called VSO Inspector from this site that would check your disc to see it is Dual Layer or not. If the video was compressed to fit unto a 4.7 GB, sometimes that can lead to a loss in quality of the video, especially since they included all the features and audio tracks.

The DVD wasn't shrink wrapped in plastic and the data on the disc is about 3,91 GB.

If the data side is purple, that's a giveaway it's a DVD-R and almost certainly a boot.

They aren't always wrapped in the UK and a single layer disc is only just over 4gb of data.

the data side of the DVD looks like an official DVD. The test with VSO Inspector was good except that it had some re-attempts in reading some of the the datablocks of the disc.

You can get yourself tools such as CD/DVD Speed or DVDInfoPro which will tell you whether a disc is pressed or not...if you're disc was pressed and you have a UPC then it's probably not a bootleg. If it's a DVD-R that was burned well obviously it's a bootleg then.

There are bootlegs of that series available. They are R0 with Chinese subs.

I could not find a real R3 release on YesAsia or other places I know don't sell boots.

I expect it's a boot. Are there any company names / copyright info / regions on the back?
Tom.

You also don't say what price you paid for opened and what price is SRP unopened ??
Also was it picked up at a swap meet or Ebay??

The Inkjet like cover leads me to boot for sure.

Are there any region logos on the cover. If it's a R1 logo, then it's a boot as it is a Korean DVD like you said.

Does it have reference to the Korean branch of the studio (or its distributor) in the copyright notice (WB Korea, Universal Korea, Spectrum movie distributors or any othe know korean companies?)

There is no R logo on the cover but on the dvd it is ALL NTSC + 18 rated
There are some company logo s on the back like the zalman king company logo and showtime entertainment and Z Digital
I bought it on ebay, the guy said he very often gets dvd's made in china like this one but guaranteed me it's not a bootleg.
