| Posted: | | | | Shouldn't the character roles for the TV shows match the movies? For example, I've seen the TV set profiles use "Smoking Man" and "Cigarette-Smoking Man" for William B. Davis' character (remember that these don't have roles listed in the credits and are up to the contributor), but the movie states "The Cigarette Smoking Man". Shouldn't we, for consistency's sake, match them up? | | | "I am Andrew Ryan and I am here to ask you a question: Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his own brow?
No, says the man in Washington. It belongs to the poor. No, says the man in the Vatican. It belongs to God. No, says the man in Moscow. It belongs to everyone.
I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose… Rapture." |

| Posted: | | | | No, they should not, Ross, they should match the SCREEN crediting. You can do what you wish locally but you know that.
In TV series it is common for names to change and roles to change Season to Season, not so common within a Season. A Captain may become a Capt. and so on. Just follow the Rules. And the Movoe stands on ITS own.

| Posted: | | | | You clearly didn't read my post. There aren't screen credits in the TV show....just the actor names. | | | "I am Andrew Ryan and I am here to ask you a question: Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his own brow?

| Posted: | | | | I think you have to weigh up the work involved, to the benefits you'd get and to be honest I can't think of any major benefit you'd get for having the cast names the same, so it seems like a lot of work for not much. I'd say as long as the actors link up between the series and film, leave it at that. |

Then why are you asking. The Rules state: "If a film does not have standard credits, use the following rules:
* If a film has actors listed in the opening credits, which are not listed in the end credits, add these to the list in DVD Profiler before those taken from the end credits. * If a film has no end credits, but does have actors credited elsewhere, enter the actors from those credits. * If an actor is credited by name but does not have an associated role, you may use another source to identify the role. In each case, list Actor’s names and roles (when given) exactly as they are in the credits and in exactly the same order credited."
You are therefore free to do as you describe,I would make a strong supporting comment and let the voters do the rest.

| Posted: | | | | And just how important is this "matching up"?
You cannot really expect someone to go out and check every other possible appearance of a person in another work to see if you can find a role name when one does not appear on the screen for the one you are profiling.
There is no "linking" of the role names, so what possible difference does it make?
If you feel compelled to do it, fine. Let the voters decide.
Seems like pretty much a waste of time, though. | | | Hal | | | Last edited: by hal9g |

Not especially important, I agree, but if someone DOES take the time to check I think it is nice to see a certain consistency if possible even if it supplies no technical improvement. I don't say force people to do it but if they do then celebrate their hard work. | | | It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong |

In this particular example (an on-screen credit in the movie and no on-screen credit in the TV series), I'd certainly agree with the original poster. I admit to being a bit surprised at some of the "who cares?" replies in this thread. Sure, it may not be that important, but I sure like consistency, and I certainly appreciate the effort! |

| Posted: | | | | If I recall, only Davis' first two or three appearances were in the end credits. The rolenames were "FBI Agent" and then "Smoking Man" I believe. Never Cigarette-Smoking Man, except in the movie as you describe, and of course commonly throughout the fandom; by the time this was his most-taken moniker, he was only ever listed after the opening credits with no rolename. Take from that what you will. |
