how do you all store/display you collections? my mrs is very much opposed to the "by studio" method i use, saying alphabetically would be easier for her. however this would lead to, for instance, the bond collection, star treks, LOTR, etc being mish mashed over a series of shelves. someone back up thinking?!

I store mine in order of purchase, with the only exception being that i put sequals together even if bought at different times.

you could still sort alphabetically and make a similar exception for related movies. You could even change the sort title in dvd profiler for your bond movies to be Bond 01, Bond 02, etc

I store them primarily by genre (as far as it is clearly identifiable), within that usually alphabetically - and occasionally by director (e.g. all Hitchcocks and all Kubricks' are together) and/or by main actor(s) (e.g. all Chaplins are together - and I also have some actor boxsets). The remainder (the ones without a genre that stands out) are sorted alphabetically.

I store mine in whatever order they happened to get placed on the shelf.  Think of playing darts blindfolded...

Shelf? Sounds like quite a lot of work. Have you considered a pile in the corner of the room?

I grouped them by general themes.

- Adventure Movies (pre 20th century, sword movies and the like)
- Romances and Comedies
- Science Fiction
- ...

within that theme they are ordered alphabetically. When there is a series with several titles they are ordered after the first one.

Not that I have a Bond collection but I would, I would find them under "B" or "0", that's just a matter of personal preference. But I wouldn't scatter them just because one is "Goldeneye" and another "Casino Royale".

I sort by genre and packaging

shelves for series/box-sets:
- SciFi series (e.g. star gate, star trek, galactica etc.)
- comedy (m.a.s.h., monk, home improvement...)
- drama (sopranos, six feet under, rome...)
- crime (c.s.i., bones, 24...)
etc.

Single movies:
- war
- action and suspense
- sci fi
- horror
- drama

etc.

...and yes, I very often have to resort...

I'm still looking for the ultimate storage solution!

I sort by decade and within those alphabetically. Digipacks are stored seperately as are all boxsets. I also have a special shelf for the Disney dvds and another rack for two special dvd series by Fox here in Germany.

I go with the good old ABC order with the exception of series.  The first movie in the series goes where it should and the rest of the movies are filled after it.

Night of the Living Dead (original)
Night of the Living Dead (remake)
Dawn of the Dead (original)
Dawn of the Dead (remake)
Day of the Dead
Land of the Dead

I sort them strictly following my DVD Profiler Sort Titles. Therefore I correct the sort titles to follow Series and Box Sets (The Tarantino Collection: Jackie Brown or James Bond 03: Goldfinger).

I sort by genre, and then alphabetically,

My Box sets are on top of the shelves that hold my collection, they don't fit in the selves anyway, when i have a TV Series that's complete, i treat them as a box set, and move them to the top of my selves

And when i have a movie that has a sequel, i'll put them all together when the first one of them comes up alphabetically, it's much easier to find a movie, cause i search by genre mostly, and also, if at some time down the road i may have to move shelves or add shelves, i can just move a genre group to another room without rearranging everything,
ofcourse those of you that have kids, they should have selves just for there movies, cause like most of us, I have a lot of films that i would never let a 7yr old watch, and the only sort rule I have for them is that the DVD gets back in it's case and in their shelf

I sort by, TV, Movie, Music. Alphabetically except for a few things like Kevin Smith, Marx Bros., Hope & Crosby Road Pictures, and my wife's request Cary Grant Films which I group together alphabetically by their  names.
