Welp my 3rd 995 seems to have some issues, so I am going to tear it down and take a look.

I know on my car forums when we tear stuff apart we take pictures and kind of make a knowledge base.

Has any one here done something like that or know of a web site that does a break down of the assembly for trouble shooting ?

This until will play a DVD with no issue, then you will get a sound like the disk is loose or wobbly then it will kinda freeze up or lock the current screen butthe counter still ticking away. I have had it come back and start playing again.

I have tinkered with the unit when I get the noise, and if I tilt the machine it TENDS to go away so I am thinking something is just loose. Right I have the left side up on 2 dvd cases Worked well last night watching CSI DVD's only locked up once.

So its not dead yet, but I wanna see if its a simple fix.

( and yea I have a few 995's on my watch list for parts if needed )

Thanks

-Robert

You can get a bunch of good info by Googling something like "CX9955V disassembly" or use in combination with one or more phases like "service manual" "support" "repair' etc. , in image mode or video mode insread of web mode. You will trip over helpful schematics, parts diagrams, how to videos, etc.

That's how I have found scoop on most of the equipment that I have questions about. I have even found service manuals in pdf format this way.

Thanks Found some fantastic links on AVS and lots of really good info there as well :

Here is what I posted up over there :

-=-=-=-=-=-
WOW, this is a great thread.

Being on a budget and having 1300+ dvd's I went the route of picking up the 995's used off of ebay.

I now have 3 of them, and the first 2 were flawless for what I am doing, the 3rd being have a small issue with the spinning disk tapping something.

Fiddling with the 3rd unit, putting it on a slight slant with the left side higher than the right seems to have fixed this noise but that isn't how I want to keep it.

So while poking around in this thread I got lots of good info on these players. Found the Service manual. Popped off the cover, and while tinkering with it what I had initally thought was this white part was making contact with the bottom edge of the disk.

So these pics kinda kill the thought I had when I first started looking.

So with a disk in the player and making the noise, I start lightly pressing on things to see if it would change the sound of the drag, and bingo, if I press on the back of the player unit that sticks out the back it removes the sound completely.

So now, without printing out and reading the entire manual, does any one know of an adjustment ? or am I going to have to really dig in and see what I can loosen and move on my own ?

Next little weird tib bit with the unit is I can't get into the diagnostic menu, tried all 3 remotes ( accounting for the 1,2,3 code sets as well )

It just powers on and does its thing.

This ones build date is June 2005 and was sold as having very low hours on it, so I was hoping it would be the most trouble free of the 3. The other 2 units are Oct 2005 and May 2008 and no issues getting them into the service menu.

Thought or Suggestions ?

Thanks again to all those the contributed to this thread, it is outstanding source of info !

-=-=-=-=--

Ill hunt a bit more for some service videos I spent a good chunk of last night reading the 995 thread overt here, thats how I found out the Dia menu and the remote direct disc access.

Thanks again for helping me out!

Good deal. On the diagnostics menu, is it possible that somebody messed with the firmware? I think there is a process for updating the firmware. Maybe you can reflash to original from the Sony site.

BTW, I discovered that I actually don't have the CX995V service manual. I thought I had it, but I can't seem to find it at the moment. Can you either post or PM the link? Thanks.

And on that rear protrusion, I believe that it is for the optical assembly (drive transport). I would remove the cover screws and see what gives. But maybe that's what you were already doing ...
