New user here.  I'm using ver 3.7.2, just installed so not too familiar with it yet.

I have two collections, one at my main home and one at my holiday home.  The ones I watch most are duplicated at both locations.  I also move DVDs between locations (but not that often, and usually just a few).

I need to be able to track what I have at each location and also to produce lists that combine both locations.

What is the usual way of doing this in DVD Profiler?  Before I go setting up separate databases or playing around with custom tags and things I just wanted to know if there is a "standard" approach before I start scanning them all in, so I don't have to do it all again if it doesn't work as expected.

Many thanks.

For DVD Profiler you can create as many databases as you like.
There are only two restrictions:
- You can only work with one at a time
- Your online collection will only show one of these

For your purposes the best option would probably be to use custom collection categories like "Home" and "Remote"

Mind you that DVDProfiler doesn't support multiple copies of the same identifier (UPC / DiscID) within one collection. There are workarounds though.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

There are multiple approaches, none of them will cover everything I'm afraid.

1) separated databases
+ all titles can be tracked
- only one db can be online, thus synching those two will always involve a bit of work, most likely via a USB-stick
- no immediate possibility to print one list

2) custom collection categories
+ one database, uploadable so synching would be easy.
- only one copy of each title possible

3) tags
Simply create tags "Main" and "Holiday" and assign them to the concerning titles
+ one database, uploadable so synching would be easy.
- only one copy of each title possible

For the "one copy"-Dilemma: you could manage those in 3) with simply assigning both tags, but that will screw with the numbers of discs.

As for moving them from one location to another: you can either move them to the other DB/Collection for a permanent solution or loan them to users "Main" and "Holiday" for temporary assignment.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm thinking that 2 databases is the way to go, using the loan facility to track temporary movement between locations.

You can always increase the number of discs...
