Hello,

I have a question about the possibilities of the software.

When I open the entry screen, we have the possibility to search the title of a movie but I would like to know if it is possible to search a complete filmography of an actor or a director by entering his name ?

Simple question but maybe too difficult to manage the result...

But thanks in advance for your answer.

Regards and happy new yaer to everybody....

There are a few choices here.

1) If you know one of the movies/TV shows that he is in within your collection, you can find him in that one under the Cast or Crew window. (For instance, Harrison Ford is in the Indiana Jones movies in my collection, so I can click on the movie and find his name in the Cast area.)

Double click his name and a new window will appear with all of his roles (there are ways you can customize this list also, but there's no need for me to get into that much detail.) This way is faster/easier, but if you don't know what movies the person is in, it's not very helpful. In that case, there is another option.

2) The more versatile way is to install a plugin called Database Query.  Once installed it can be found under the Tools menu in DVD Profiler.

It can be confusing at first to find your way around it (of course, if you need any help with it, you can always ask here as well) but it's very robust doing many things that DVD Profiler cannot do on its own.

I hope this helps

You mention wanting to see their complete filmography. While Blair is correct in what he said above... this will not give you their complete filmography... it will only show you the ones you have in your collection.

As far as I know there is no way for the software to show you their complete filmography. You would need to look this up outside of the program. Something like IMDb.

I'm with Pete on this one. If I want a complete filmography, I use <gasp> IMDb.

Thanks for your answers...

Yes, I knew the possibility to have all the movies IN MY COLLECTIOn with such an actor.
My question was about movies I don't have...

I use another software for my CD and there, I have to possibility to choose an artist and having all the records he made.
I was hoping having the same possibility with DVD Profiler.

Is it so difficult ?
When we enter a movie, the software is searching in a big database, no ? ...so why not filtering by actor/director ?

In theory a query of the maindatabase would be quite easy to implement.

Technically this will lead to unsatisfactory results and if only because the database is not (and most likely never will be) consolidated. This starts with such strange things as having "Film A" counted as 10 different titles (for not filling in Original Title correctly, adding Editions to the Title-field, incorrect Release Date, Incorrect CoOs, etc..). This results in e.g. Tom Cruise (who currently has 41 movies in his filmography) being listed in our Credit LookUp Tool with not less than 116 titles.

And once we get this sorted out we will still have the problem that varying names of Cast-/Crew-members are not traced correctly, because of a general unwillingness to use the DVDProfiler linking system (Common Name -> Most credited variant) and trying to sneak in other linking systems which sadly are not compatible at all.

But, yes, it is possible.
It is not implemented yet so you may want to post this in the Feature Request forum.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

That would still only yield a list of all titles that are on DVD, not a complete filmography. And even then there might be titles on DVD that had never been contributed.

Right... even with such a change you still wouldn't get everything. Most probably... but not all.

Thanks for your answers...

OK, I see the problem...it is easy to implement but not easy to check the validity of the results...big problem...
The comparison with the CD database I use is that actors are playing in much more movies than musicians are producing albums.

In fact my demand was about a crazy idea I've had : I would like to inventory ALL THE MOVIES I've seen in my life.
Yes, I know, it's crazy...
I will start manually and I will see if it is realistic...  (I doubt)

Thanks for the advices..;
