DVDP is not really the tool for what you're looking for.

IMDb on the other hand does exactly this and when you have an account you can create your own watch lists.

I took a look at Letterboxd, and I was surprised at how comprehensive it is. It took me quite a while to find a movie that wasn't listed.

If it's not there, you can contribute it to http://www.themoviedb.org and it will show up the next day.

Glad to help, it's a great site.  You can also export your data from the settings page.

Saw you signed up, it's a great site.  Just a FYI with a pro account you can import data.  So if you've been tracking what you watched & rated in profiler, you could export it, format it and import into your letterboxd account.

I will do that. I already wrote a small program that converts the xml export into a csv file. I'm just wondering if I shouldn't split it into smaller files. It's over 4000 titles.

Going back to the OP: regarding your first question, solution(s) have already been presented by others.

I'd like to add that DVDprofiler focuses very much on what you own and what you can identify, primarily by EAN/UPC or otherwise by title. You cannot select by actor or director from the central database. You can select by title to create a list of the movies as desired, even if you don't have them.

That brings me to your second question. In DVDprofiler speak:
Origin denotes the location of the producing company / companies that made the film.
Locality denotes generally the country where a film was available for sale by means of a DVD, BluRay or HD DVD. By consequence, a title may occur repeatedly in the central database, for every country it was available for retail or even within a country if there have been several different releases.

When selecting a title, it therefore makes no sense to list "all countries" for origin but it does for locality and actually that option is present. Just play around on the Add Title screen, via Title tab.

What locality to select for your collection of seen movies depends on your taste. When available you can select your home country, via the preview options you can select the most elaborately documented version etc.

Not so crazy to me -- I'm doing something like that right now with Profiler.

I have multiple custom collection lists. One of them is titled "NF/AM/Roku/PPV/SHO", and which always shows (0) as the total, because when I add a movie to this category, I set the "count as" value to "0". Most of the abbreviations in the category title are easy enough to guess at: NF=Netflix, AM=Amazon, PPV=Other pay per view, SHO=Showtime.

Then I set a watch by event to indicate when I saw it, and make whatever other comment I want to keep track of.

Then when I select "Tools" -> "Edit Users" -> ("username") -> "Viewing History" I see the movies I've watched and when.

I've added about half my Netflix viewing history to this back to 2003, and have ratings histories for several thousand other movies which I set in Netflix that I can add as well. These would all be "watched prior to date 'x'", sort of.

For the television series that I know I watched at the original air dates, I can (haven't yet) go back and add a watch event to the specific disc that contains that episode. It's very time consuming, but I might get 'round to it one of these days.

My other major category, which is now just historical as well, is "Traded / Returned / Other", and this is where I track all the movies I once had and traded away on Swap / Swaptree (now defunct) movie swapping sites. I used to buy lots of movies off of Craigslist and yard sales as "trade bait" so most of them were never watched, but some of them were, and they'd get watch history in that category as well.

Have to check out "Letterboxd" to see what it offers.
